3 day course for 20 Tufts Medical Center nurses. The course will provide theoretical foundations of business planning, strategy and execution. This process includes a review and critique of principles of business fundamentals as it relates to nursing and health care. Nurses will explore entrepreneurship and identify strategies for achieving business goals in light of political, social, economic, legal and social context that are informed by the literature and applied theoretical knowledge.

Tim Simard: is an accomplished senior executive, entrepreneur, thought leader, and management consultant with more than 25 years of success across multiple industries with the past ten years in healthcare, pharmacy and technology strategy and operations. Currently, Tim is focused on digital transformation and innovation initiatives in healthcare, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sectors. He applies a systems approach with strategic and agile thinking of complex problems while leveraging selective best practices and innovation from other industry sectors. Most recently Tim was the CEO and founder for a leading edge virtual patient care Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) enterprise solution that won multiple $100B+ clients, including major pharmacy chain and Fortune 25 wholesale and distributor which sold in 2016. POET was recognized by Institute of Medicine as of one of fifty most innovative products in the U.S… POET was a customizable B2B2 platform for to enable personalized and coordinated patient care for multiple disease states and associated medication management consultations. Tim has built multi-disciplined and inspired teams with vision and commitment to drive global strategy, IT, new products and services, and transformation initiatives in pharmaceutical, technology, manufacturing, energy, aerospace, consumer products and education sectors. Clients have included industry leaders such as CVS Health, Cisco Systems, Exide Technologies, United Healthcare, Pitney Bowes and Lockheed Martin.
Alexa is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner and one of the leading ladies of LexRx. She has both clinical and research experience in aesthetic practice. Alexa graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-Medicine/Health Science, and received both a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and Master of Science degree in Nursing from Regis College. Alexa was also the recipient of the Masters of Nursing Excellence Award at Regis College—an honor awarded to one candidate each year. She was a featured panelist/speaker at the 2018 NP Entrepreneurship Conference held at Northeastern University.
Prior to attending graduate school, Alexa worked at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Plastic Surgery Research Laboratory alongside the Division Chief; during her three years in the laboratory, she gained first-hand clinical/surgical experience, in addition to many professional/academic publications. Presentation and publication platforms include—International Federation of Adipose Therapeutics and Science, Boston Breast Workshop, New England Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons Conference, Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, Harvard Surgery Research Day Symposium, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. During her clinical training for her Masters, Alexa trained alongside the Lead Nurse Practitioner in the MGH Plastic Surgery Clinic, where she perfected the art of injectables.
Sapana Patel is a certified adult primary care nurse practitioner currently working at three different occupational health clinics for a fortune 500 company in New Jersey. She is responsible for maintaining the occupational health and safety of over 4,000 employees.
She also owned and operated her own consulting company where she served as an educational consultant for a local home care agency. Her primary objectives were to educate current and incoming staff on the management of complex conditions and the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals. Sapana was able to facilitate the adoption of new best practices for the agency; as measured by decreased hospitalization rates and higher patient satisfaction scores.
She is also the Executive Director of UNITY SME, a newly formed 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to educating all people on the importance of social responsibility and that being a part of this world comes with the responsibility to care for one another. Starting off as a grassroots movement in 2011, a few friends came together to host a toy drive now known as Santa’s Little All Stars. Over the past 7 years, the event as proven to not only be sustainable but also scalable. This year, she will oversee 10 events in 10 cities across the nation.
All of these experiences have ignited her passion for entrepreneurship but soon realized conventional views on the dynamic between nursing and entrepreneurship have generally assumed that one does not significantly impact the other. Her doctoral studies at Yale University are focused on creating resources for NPs which will afford them the skill set needed to support the transition into entrepreneurial practice settings.
Karen K. Giuliano, PhD, RN, MBA, FAAN

Karen has over 20 years of experience in critical care nursing, innovative medical product development, and clinical outcomes research in both clinical and industry settings.
Most recently, Karen joined the faculty of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Karen’s interdisciplinary program of research is focused in two main areas: nonventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia and IV infusion safety using IV Smart Pumps. In her work with IV smart pumps, Karen is focused on using human factors principles to improve usability. Karen was recently invited as one of 50 interdisciplinary national experts to participate in a consensus conference sponsored by the Institute for Safe Medical Practices (ISMP) to create a set of national standards for IV medication administration safety using IV smart pumps. ISMP is known and respected as the gold standard for medication safety and serves as a vital force for progress. ISMP’s advocacy work alone has resulted in numerous changes in clinical practice and public policy.
Karen is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), a six-sigma green belt and has received numerous awards. She holds a BSN and PhD in nursing from Boston College, nurse practitioner from the University of Massachusetts, an MBA (Global Management Concentration) from Babson College and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Yale University.

Background: Dr. Layman began his career by earning his Associates of Science in Electrical Engineering (EET) Certification and working in microwave engineering and design. As he transitioned to nursing and ultimately received his Doctorate from Yale University, he maintained a hands-on, solutions-oriented approach to problem-solving. He brings to Jefferson his experience working with other nurses and healthcare professionals to conceptualize and create cost-effective solutions to pressing issues in healthcare. He is a Board Certified Nurse Executive, and an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Alexandra Rogers, NP Alexandra is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner and one of the leading ladies of Boston-based LexRx and Inject With Lex. She graduated from Emmanuel College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biostatistics (Magna cum laude), and received both a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and Master of Science degree in Nursing from Regis College. While an undergraduate, Alexandra balanced a rigorous academic career all while excelling as an NCAA athlete playing Women’s Soccer; she received the NCAA Women’s Soccer Sportsmanship Award for two consecutive years. Prior to attending graduate school, Alexandra worked at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in the Adult and Pediatric Urgent Care Center, and then transitioned to managing her own urgent care clinic. In these roles, Alexandra gained immense clinical knowledge and exposure to many complex medical problems—something her clients appreciate. Her strong foundation in urgent/emergency medicine has translated into a flourishing career as a Nurse Practitioner and a trusted provider at LexRx. While urgent/emergency medicine remains a passion of Alexandra’s, she found excitement and potential in the avenue of aesthetic medicine as a specialty that allows providers to both empower and promote selfconfidence in clients’ overall well-being—thus the forefront of LexRx practice. Alexandra brings passion, aptitude, creativity, and diligence to the ever-changing field of medicine and a new approach to the art of perfecting injectables. In the Fall of 2018 Alexandra will be joining Alexa, as the duo takes the podium to teach the first-ever, University-based/Co-Sponsored injectables training program at Northeastern University through the Northeastern University School Health Academy.
Rudy Jackson is the Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Buffalo General Hospital and Gates Vascular Institute. In this role, he manages the nursing practice of over 1200 nurses and a 100 million dollar budget.
Prior to this role, Rudy spent 27 years in the US Army holding multiple positions retiring as the Deputy Commander of Clinical Operations for 2 Combat Support Hospitals. His roles in the army have included combat medic, trauma nurse, and civil affairs officer. He spent 15 months deployed in Afghanistan where he worked on developing the first democratic election in the region, creating a 100% Afghan operated emergency medical service, and built schools for girls.
Rudy received his bachelor’s degree from the University of the Incarnate Word in Nursing, a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Webster University, and his doctorate in health care leadership and policy from Yale University.
Rudy has been the recipient of multiple military and civilian accolades including Soldier’s Medal for Heroism, Bronze Star, Valor awards, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society Nurse Image Maker Award, and PACE award in leadership.
Nikki Baniewicz is both an accountant and attorney. She is currently the General Counsel and Chief Financial Officer for a group of boutique pharmacies with over $150 million in annual revenue where she specializes in corporate and tax law, business formation and finance.
She works extensively with individuals and businesses on organizational structures, tax implications and business requirements. She has completed the business formation process for over 45 companies in various states.
She earned her J.D., cum laude, in 2013 from Syracuse University College of Law and her B.S. in Business Administration from the University at Buffalo in 2010. She is admitted as an attorney in Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey and has worked in Boston, New York, New Jersey, and London.
Paul is a critical care nurse, who worked in the Boston Area. After a strong career in patient care he shifted to corporate arena. He worked for Hewlett-Packard, Philips and Mindray. He has experience in sales, product marketing, and creating new products for new markets.
He currently is working as VP for e-Health and Marketing for Nonin Medical. As a Registered Nurse with critical care experience and a sales background he brings a unique set of skills to the complex and changing health care marketplace.
